Global Forest Watch

Updated: Dec 13, 2019

I recently stumbled upon a website called Global Forest Watch. It allows the user to view tree cover loss and tree cover gain globally. It also compares tree cover in countries around the world and shows what type of forest cover exists in individual countries. Data exists from 2001 to 2018. Playing with this website is a great way to further one’s understanding of deforestation around the world.

Another interesting global forest change website was created by the University of Maryland. It uses Landsat images to show forest extent and change globally. You can analyze aspects such as forest cover loss and forest cover gain. If interested, you can even add on background imagery and other data layers, and you can download the data set used to create this map.
